Area of Expertise - Power Development...

In 1970’s Chief Akande as the president and major share holder of the new Africa Technical and Electric Company (NAFTEC)-the representative Company of General Electric of the USA-was responsible for the design, supply, and installation and commissioning of the following gas turbine power plants for the national Electric Power Authority (NEPA) of Nigeria.

  • 120 MW Ughelli Power Plant
  • 72 MW Ijora Power Plant
  • 300 MW Delta 111 Power station
  • 450 MW Delta IV Power station

Power Development was the first Engineering function of the Division. In 1976 AIC established its subsidiary – Engineering & Power Development Nigeria Limited (EPDN) – in joint venture with Balfour Beatty Engineering of the UK. Completed assignments have included:

AIC’s multi- discipline staff maintains a capability in all aspects of power Development and the Electricity industry:

AIC’s capability in this field has now been applied to overseas projects with a recent proposal for rural electrification in the Gambia.

It is of historic interest to note that the first engineering assignment undertaken in Nigeria by Balfour Beatty in 1929 was for hydro-electric developments in Bukuru to support the emerging tin mining industry in this Plateau region of the country. EPDN continued that tradition in hydro-electric developments for the Nigerian Electricity Supply Corporation (NESCO), itself evolved from the Hydro Power generating capacity at Bukuru. Now in 1995 AIC commenced their latest project assignment funded through the African Development Bank for the Jos –Bukuru water supply scheme and on behalf of the Plateau Public Utilities Board.
